This tutorial is intended for users that have a ‘modded’ XBOX360 (i.e. “Firmware Flashed“) and is not intended for out-of-the-box systems. Nowadays XBOX360 rips are done professionally, and in most cases require a minimal amount of tweaking to get them going as planned.

You will require:

Hardware:

— A DVD-DL burner (Dual-layer).

— DVD+R DL blank (DVD9) media disks (Verbatim is recommended). Don’t use minus-r (-R) disks.

Software:

— XDVDMulleter – current release is “XDVDMulleterBeta10.2″

— ImgBurn – Burning software – current file is “SetupImgBurn_2.4.1.0.exe”.

STEP 1 — A Look at XBOX360 Releases

Pre-Patched Games

Some NFO files will stipulate that the release is ready-to-burn and should be compatible with an “IXtreme’d” XBOX360. These are called pre-patched games:

You’ll also notice that these will often contain a *.dvd file alongside the *.iso file. The *.dvd file is used by your DVD burning software to set up the burn – it’s similar to a *.cue file. Open the RAR archive to confirm:

If your game has a *.dvd file, skip to STEP 2.

Not Pre-Patched:

If you only have the *.ISO file, you’ll need to create the *.dvd file for the game yourself.

1.1 — Unpack and run XDVDMulleter.exe, and select “View ISO details”. Click “Next”.

1.2 — Assuming that you’ve already downloaded and unpacked the XBOX game (.ISO), you’ll need to select “Load from file”. Now, browse to your ISO image.

You should now see it listed in the above box – click “Next”. Here you’ll see the info for the ISO Region and patches that have been applied to the game:

NOTE: Be sure that “IXtreme Compatible” is checked, if not already done so. You’ll likely not be able to change the “ISO Region” for the game – this was pre-ordained by the rip source. Verify that the selected region(s) is compatible with your XBOX360 region.

1.3 — In that same window, click the “Other” tab – select “Make .dvd file” from the menu. By default, this will save the file to the same directory as the ISO. After saving the *.dvd file, exit XDVDMulleter.

You should now be able to burn the image.

STEP 2 — Burning with ImgBurn

2.1 — Launch ImgBurn, and click on “Write Image file to disc”:

2.2 — In ‘Source’ – click the folder icon and browse to your *.dvd file:

2.3 — Insert a blank DVD+DL disk, and browse to your desired DVD burner (if it isn’t already selected) and click the “write” button at the bottom. Be sure that you’ve selected the slowest possible burn speed first.

Troubleshooting Tips

Here’s a few tips if you run into any error messages:

— Be sure to use Verbatim DVD+DL media, and burn at the slowest speed possible – 2x burning is preferred (this is very important). Prior to burning, shut down as many running programs as you can.

— In some instances, there may be a problem with the Layer Break setting in ImgBurn; where you’ll need to manually enter in a Layer Break point (number):

1. — Open the *.dvd file with a text editor (Notepad) – you should see something like this. Remember this number – you’ll need it in Step 4 below.

2. — Launch ImgBurn, and click on “Write image file to disc”:

3. — In ‘Source’ – click the folder icon and browse to your *.dvd file:

4. — From the above menu, go to TOOLS > Settings and click on the “Write” tab. Look to where it says Options – Layer Break (For DL Media). Change it from “Calculate Optimal” to “User Defined” and enter in the number from the *.dvd file shown in Step 1. (i.e 1913760). Click OK to save your changes.

— You may also need to manually change your DVD-DL drive in ImgBurn:

1. — Go to TOOLS > Drive > Change Book Type… and click the tab for the brand of your DVD burner. Now, where it says “Change For:” select from the dropdown “Drive (for DVD+R DL Media)”:

2. — Now, click the refresh button below it:

3. — Next, where it says “New Settings:“, change this to DVD-ROM, click “Change”.

You should get a “success!” message – click OK to finalize your new settings. Go back and try the burn again.

Type or paste the following command:slmgr -rearm

A confirmation message will be displayed, stating that the command completed successfully, and that you will need to restart the machine in order for the changes to take effect. So reboot your machine.

After your system reboots, confirm the changes, by going again into the properties of Computer ( right click on Computer icon > Click onProperties ), under the Windows Activation section you will notice that the counter has been reset to 30 days.

Repeat these steps whenever the 30 days are almost completed, that is when there is 1 or 2 days remaining, run the slmgr -rearm command so that you gain another 30 days. Do not run the command if you have enough remaining days, that is if you have for example 20 remaining days and ran the command, you will lose the 20 days and the counter will be reset to 30 days. so the best thing to do to gain the 120 days is to run the command at the very last day of the evaluation period.

Written by Jeff Browning.

This method tricks the computer into thinking the computer it’s brand new and leads you through the setup again to create a new administrator account.

This guide should take only about five or ten minutes, but there is some music and you have to boot into single-user mode, so if your in a public place with inquisitive people bring headphones and try to be subtle.

If you want to recover the password of any current user on the target computer in cleartext (that means actually viewing the user’s password instead of just resetting it), check out our other guide on cracking Mac OS X passwords.

Requirements

Wireless network password (not a must, but helpful if you want internet on a secured network right away)

Headphones (if you’re in a public place and don’t want people giving you weird looks)

Procedure

1. Boot into Single-User Mode

Turn on the computer and when you hear the startup chime hold CMD+S. This boots the computer into single-user mode, giving you root access. It is important to note that this can be blocked by a firmware password. If that’s the case, head on over to our other guide on how to get into single-user mode while locked.

2. Mount the Hard Drive

Once single-user mode loads (it looks like a black screen with white text) we need to mount the hard drive. So at the prompt type in:

/sbin/mount -uw /

3. Remove the “Setup has been completed” File

Now that the drive is mounted we can edit the file system. We need to delete a file that tells your computer that you have completed setup. So type in:

rm /var/db/.applesetupdone

This deletes the file “.applesetupdone” in the /var/db/ directory, which the computer checks for on startup to ensure that the computer has been set up.

4. Reboot

Pretty self explanatory. We need the system to reboot so it can check for the file and not find it. Type in:

reboot

5. Watch the Video

Your computer will shut down and reboot. A setup window should pop up asking what language you want your computer to be in. Just like it would when you turn on your computer for the first time. After you select a language, a welcome video plays. This is when you need your headphones, unless there is nobody around, in which case you can enjoy the little music.

6. Continue Setup

Go through the rest of the setup process.

Be sure to select “DO NOT TRANSFER MY DATA”.

Don’t worry, all of your old files will still be on the computer.

At one point during setup you will have to configure your internet connection, this is when you need your wireless password. It’s fine if you don’t have the password, you can enter it later if you need to.

7. Set up the Administrator Account

Near the end of the setup you will be asked to create an administrator account for your computer.

Be sure to make the name of the admin account different from the existing one.

You can name the account anything that you want, except for the name of the old administrator account. If the new account is given the same name as the old one it will overwrite the old account, causing all the account’s files to be deleted. That is not optimal.

8. Finish Setup and Log In

Wrap up the setup and the computer should automatically log you into your new administrator account.
